Someone’s getting paid, a financial reward, but they also feel that they want to have a connection. Perhaps they feel that what they’re doing is improving the environment so they’re working on something that has a greater cause than themselves, they feel an intrinsic value because they are personally getting some value out of the job. For example, they feel like they are making the world a better place by doing the work or they can take pride in what they’re doing and they realize that other people are recognizing it. There’s a lot of different factors.

The key for your success when you’re helping someone change their behavior is going to be to understand some of the key motivators for the people that you are helping to motivate or change their behavior. You can think in terms of the farm owner. What motivates the farm owner? There may be many different factors but those may not necessarily be the same as a farm employee. So if you’re a farm owner and you’re thinking about what motivates yourself, that may not be the same as your employee. So that’s another factor that you need to keep in mind when you are helping someone to change their behavior. Helping you understand what motivates people will make you a better manager or trainer. It can have an impact for helping someone change their behavior, helping them perform tasks better, to communicate better. There’s a variety of different benefits that someone can gain from understanding what motivates someone. When we’re thinking in terms of what motivates someone to get something started, we need to keep in mind their specific characteristics or the characteristics of the group and what’s going to motivate them.
